W2 Employees vs. Gig Workers: Why Your Personal Assistant's Employment Status Matters

 

At some point in the hiring process for home help, most people arrive at a question they can't quite articulate. It's not about the tasks. It's not about the schedule or the price. It's something closer to: if this person is in my home, around my family, handling the details of my life...who's actually responsible for that?

It's the right question. And the answer depends almost entirely on something most service companies don't lead with: whether the people doing the work are employees or independent contractors.

Two Very Different Models

The personal assistant and home services industry runs on two fundamentally different staffing models. Some companies employ their staff directly as W2 employees. Others work with independent contractors (sometimes called 1099 workers or gig workers), who are hired on a per-job or per-project basis.

From the outside, the experience can look similar. Someone shows up, handles your tasks, and leaves. But the structure behind that interaction is meaningfully different, and it affects everything from consistency to accountability to what happens when something goes wrong.

 

What W2 Employment Actually Means

A W2 employee has a formal employment relationship with the company. The company withholds taxes, carries liability insurance that covers the employee's work, and is responsible for that person's conduct on the job. The employee receives training, operates under company standards, and is accountable to a structure that exists beyond the individual transaction.

For a client, this means a few things in practice. The person coming into your home has been vetted, trained, and insured by the company, not just selected from a pool of available workers. If something goes wrong, there's a clear line of accountability. And because the employee's relationship is with the company rather than with you directly, the consistency of their work is tied to a standard that exists regardless of whether you're watching.

 

What Gig Work Actually Means

Independent contractors operate differently. They're self-employed, which means they carry their own tax liability and, in many cases, their own insurance. Though coverage varies widely, it isn't always verified by the platform or company connecting them to clients.

Gig-based models can work well for one-off tasks where the stakes are low. But for ongoing home management and personal assistance work that happens inside your home, around your family, and often without you present, the accountability structure matters.

With a contractor, the relationship is transactional by design. No employer is standing behind the work. If the person doesn't show, or the quality isn't there, or something in your home is damaged, the resolution path is less clear and often less protected.

 

Why It Matters for Home and Life Management

Questions Worth Asking Any Service You Consider

Before you bring someone into your home regularly, these are worth asking:

  • Are your staff W2 employees or independent contractors?

  • Who carries liability insurance for the work done in my home?

  • What happens if something is damaged or goes wrong?

  • How are your team members vetted and trained?

  • What does ongoing accountability look like?

The answers will tell you a lot about what the relationship is actually built on.
