How to begin organizing your closet

Is your closet in need of some help but you’re unsure where to start? Here are some closet tips from Queen of To Do! We can’t reveal all of our Personal Assistants’ closet organizing secrets, but these should get you started :)

Clothes

  • Organize clothes by type (shirts, pants, etc.) or by function (work, casual, etc.)
  • Careful with what you hang! Sweaters and stretchy fabrics may get stretched out and worn out at the shoulders over time.
  • Consider rotating seasonal items in and out of your main closet space to make more room.
  • If possible, add a second rack to maximize the usage of vertical space.
  • Be choosy about hangers: wire hangers can stretch fabrics out while felt hangers are great for strappy pieces.
  • KonMari folding may be helpful in drawers, as it lets you see all of the items without digging.
  • Some garments have loops sewn into them for hanging (if you haven’t gotten annoyed with them and cut them off already!) if it’s a heavier fabric use these with caution and watch for signs of damage or wear.

Shoes:

  • Have a lot of heels? A wooden shoe rack or shelf is much better for storage over wire shelves so the heel tips don’t get stuck.
  • Sentimental shoes or shoes that aren’t worn very often should be placed higher up on shelves.
  • Individual plastic boxes for shoe storage are a good option if you’re concerned about dust settling on them. Ensure that the shoes fit neatly in the box, without any squishing or wrinkling, as this will damage the shoe over time.
  • Boots, especially tall ones that go up the calf, should be stuffed with some material so they hold their shape. If the boot flops over on itself, then that wrinkle/crease *will* deepen over time and become permanent.

Purses:

  • High end purses will come with dust covers, these thin sacks protect the purse from sunlight and dust.
  • If there’s no dust covers, the purses should *not* touch each other due to risk of the dye transferring. Arrange them lightest to darkest, so if one does accidentally transfer, it won’t be quite as visible.
  • Do not hang purses by their straps, this will harm them over time.
  • Be careful to not wrinkle or crease the bags when storing them. A small crease now leads to a permanent mark in the future!
  • For nice bags, or ones that are a unique shape, they should be stuffed with something prior to storing. There are purse pillows for this, but some paper or old t-shirts will also certainly work.

And of course Queen of To Do is here to help at any step. All of our Personal Assistants are trained in organizing and closet makeovers, in fact for many of us it’s one of our favorite tasks! No matter how much or little help you need, we’re here.
